The Forgotton Sin Of Gluttony
Many people think of sin as something that is not only offensive and egregious to God but is also socially and societal wrong. Everyone would agree murder is wrong and so is theft, rape, and child abuse. But there is one sin our society has almost completely forgotten and that is the sin of Gluttony. Gluttony put simply is over indulgence in food to the point of excess. An example in popular culture would be the competitive eating championships that go on where usually great big fat people gather to eat massive amounts of food in short periods of time. Gluttony shows alack of self control and an idolatry of the heart towards food. I feel this sin is mostly forgotten by society because a man who eats one too many cheese burgers or has a little too much Port with his steak is looked upon as a sort of spohistcite who knows how to "enjoy life". In all honesty the glutton is no different then a massive hog gorging himself at a giant trough. The book of Proverbs says in chapter 23:2 to put a knife to your throat if you are a man given to appetite. Our society is food obsessed from Food Network to all you can eat buffets. As a nation we have forgotten what a wretched sin gluttony is and enshrined it along with the acquisitive covetousness, envy and sloth as virtues in America. 1 Corinthians 6:10 says drunkards will not enter the Kingdom of Heaven you could easily replace the word drunkard with glutton and the meaning would be the same for drunkenness is a form of gluttony it is an over indulgence and obsession with alcohol. Note in verse nine of 1 Corinthians Chapter Six it say that homosexuals, male prostitutes, fornicators, and Idolaters will not enter The Kingdom of Heaven so drunkards who are gluttons for alcohol are just as damned as the homosexual prostitute working the strip or the benighted heathen worshiping a stone idol. In cocnlsoun the sin of Gluttony is forgivable as is all sin remember in 1 Corinthians Chapter Six after it lists off the vile sinners that will not go to Heaven The Apostle Paul says in verse elven "And such where some of you but you where washed, but you where sanctified but you where justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and by the spirit of Our God. So there is forgiveness even for The Glutton there is room at the cross for the junkie, the liar and the glutton. Gluttony is a sin this must not be forgotten something to think about the next time you order that Big Mac and fries. Also I speak from personal experience as a repenting glutton. The draw of gluttony is it seems like a "little" sin but the eating of the Apple in the garden seemed a "little" sin to Adam and Eve and that cost them The Garden of Edan and cursed mankind with original sin. Gluttony also carryes a perverse form of pride attached to it as pride is the seed bed of almost all sin. I know I would set out to eat massive quantities of food particularly at fast food restaurants for example at one point at a local McDonald's I ate in one setting an entire Big mac, one large fire, two apple pies, a large chocolate shake and An order of Chicken nuggets. Or if not all that in one setting then over a short period of time in our culture to eat massive quantities of food is rewarded and even praised. While people starve in Ethiopia, North Korea, and Zimbabwe Truly our culture is becoming The Roman Empire anew. May God either humble us with chastening or take us out of our misery like an old gone in the tooth dog.
